Travelguide Tours of Paris France : 1. Montmartre Paris

This part of Paris is famous! Visitors to the area are immersed in the evocative street scenes and the area creates a wealth of different memories.  Maybe you’ll remember the bittersweet strains of Edith Piaf tunes, the truly Parisian cafes and boulangeries, the hint of naughtiness, gaiety and bawdiness of past times at Moulin Rouge, the impressiveness of the Sacre Coeur, the fun of a funicular ride, the wonderful views from the top of the Mont.

Whatever!  You must spend time in this area of Paris and it is best seen on foot with a walking tour of the intriguing streets, alleyways and squares. For an overview of Paris go to Paris Travel Videos and enjoy the TravelGuide.tv short films on Paris Attractions, Tours, Museums, Nightlife, etc.  Here you’ll find an interactive Map of Paris to help you find your way around Montmartre.

Montmartre was once outside the city of Paris and became linked with the gay night life, revues, bordellos, dancing drinking and more.  Stroll past the Moulin Rouge in the Boulevard de Clichy and you might take in a revue and dinner. You think of the can-can, the dance hall with its famous windmill motif with gay red sails, and wonder about windmills in Montmartre.  Once there were more than 20 windmills in this elevated area.  They were used to press the grapes from local vineyards and to grind wheat after the harvest. Now there are only two (not the Moulin Rouge as only the sails of the windmill survive) – Moulin de la Galette and Moulin du Radet on Rue Lepic. The Rue Lepic is a browsing area for shopping with a bustling fruit and vegetable market.

If you’re into Salavdor Dali, make sure to visit the Espace Montmartre in Rue Poulbot where there’s a permanent display of hundreds of his works.  Dali spent some time in Paris with Picasso before World War II, he died in 1989 and left an revolutionary mark on 20th Century art.

From Place St Pierre (near Anvers Metro station) you can crane your neck to see the startling shimmering white Sacre Coeur basilica towering up over the city.  Walk up the steep hill and you’ll arrive out of breath – best and great fun is to take the short funicular trip up and be sure to watch views of Paris unfolding as you ascend.

When facing Sacre Coeur (after another few flights of steps), look to the left at one of the oldest Church in Paris, St Pierre de Montmartre. Originally it was part of the Benedictine Monastery which was built in the 12th Century.  The basilica itself was completed just before the start of World War I.  It has some wonderful art pieces and a creepy crypt.  The dome is almost as high as the Eiffel Tower and a visit to it provides you with even more wonderful scenes of Paris.  If you decide to give the Dome a miss, you can enjoy and marvel at the views from the balcony in front of Sacre Coeur – if it’s a clear day you can pick out many of the famous Paris landmarks.

Other places to visit include the Cemetiere de Montmartre Avenue Rachel (graves of Nijinsky, Offenbach and other famous Parisians), and the square behind the basilica (get a portrait done on the spot, a great souvenir and enjoy a glass of wine or cup of coffee).

Enjoy your visit to Montmartre and Paris France!

Walking Tours Paris France ? 2. Ile De St Louis

Walking tours Paris France – 2. Ile de St Louis

Walk from the Ile de la Cite (after visiting the famous Paris Notre Dame) to the adjacent island of Ile de St Louis via the Pont St Louis – what a contrast – on Ile de St Louis the pace of life changes, the tourist masses disappear, the elegant buildings line the streets, peace and quiet descends especially at the weekends, so just stroll around soaking up the atmosphere. It is surrounded by the River Seine and you can see excellent shots of the river on this website  www.travelguide.tv/paris/tours.

Have a glass of wine at one of the tiny cafes, visit some of the wonderful delicatessen shops, smell the fresh bread in the boulangeries, buy an icecream on Rue St Louis, explore some of the wine shops, indulge in a piece of true French cheese, and know you are in the heart of Paris.  This island is in the Paris River Seine, alongside the more famous island, Ile de la Cite, famous for the Notre Dame Cathedral, Palais de Justice, etc.  For more videos of Paris, www.travelguide.tv has a spelendid set of tourist videos.

On Ile de St Louis, you can visit the Museum of Adam Mickiewicz (the Polish poet who lived in Paris for many years).  The museum is open only on Thursdays from 2pm to 6pm and you can arrange a guided tour by contacting the Paris Museum in advance – telephone (1) 43 54 35 61.

The church on the island, St Louis en l’Ile, dates from the 17th Century and look out for the great iron clock at the entrance.  The outside is a little unimpressive but inside it is glorious.  Inside you’ll see a statue of St Louis and he is holding a Crusader’s sword.  St Louis gave his name to St Louis in Missouri USA.  The church is Baroque in style and is richly decorated.  On occasions the church is closed to visitors – usually when the choir is practicing.  However, watch out for the concert programme – there are wonderful performances mainly in the summer months during the Festival Musique en l’Ile.

Another wonderful sight on this small island is the Hotel de Luzun.   It is on Quai d’Anjou but unfortunately unless part of a private tour you can’t see the interior.  One of its famous features though is the drainpipes – yes the pipes to guide the rain from the roof, etc and you can enjoy these as you stroll past – look out for the fish feature on some of them.

Once you have “done” the Ile de la Cite and Ile St Louis, the heart of Paris France, you are ready to visit the rest of Paris. Check out the Paris France Video website to see the attractions of Paris.   Here you can also use the interactive map of Paris, check the weather and immerse yourself in the wonders of this great city.

How To Pick A Vaction Apartment In Paris

If you have begun to look for an apartment for a trip to Paris you have probably discovered that the possibilities are infinite and the range of price is phenomenal. Here’s a mini-guide that will help you understand the factors that property owners in Paris consider when pricing their apartments. Once you understand how prices are established, you’ll be in a better position to make an intelligent decision about a rental.

Location, location, location! As always in real estate, this is the first rule. In Paris that means proximity to the center of the city: the closer to the center, the higher the price. Look at a city map before you decide (check out Mapquest, Paris.com or similar sites), and remember that time spent walking, riding trains or driving from a dull and distant neighborhood is boring, boring, BORING – especially when you realize that your time in Paris may be severely limited and you could have avoided the problem by renting closer to the center. Be close, be happy and be prepared to pay a little extra for your decision.

Space is expensive. Paris is a densely populated city filled with apartments that are, by American standards, quite small. The space in Paris apartments is usually defined in “square meters”, you can get an idea of an American equivalent by multiplying by ten. “75 square meters”, therefore, is about 750 square feet. That’s a small apartment by most American standards, but 75 square meters in Paris is a generous, comfortable one bedroom apartment. (Anything less than 75 square meters is likely to leave two people feeling claustrophobic.) Look carefully at the square meter figures in the ads. Make sure you’ll be able to live comfortably in the space you select.

Bathrooms are expensive. It is rare to find an apartment in Paris with more than one bathroom. Apartments with two bathrooms are substantially more convenient and marginally more expensive. If there are two or more of you and the price differential is not too great, you may decide to spring for the second john.

Sunlight is expensive. Paris streets are often narrow and dark. South-facing apartments on upper floors, or apartments facing sunny courtyards, are more expensive than dark apartments on lower floors or apartments with windows facing the sunless north side of a street. Think sunshine and air before your departure: a week spent in a dank cave – even a dank cave in Paris – can be pretty dreary.

Quiet is expensive. The French are more accustomed to urban noise than we are. Many apartments in Paris, even apartments in wonderful neighborhoods, are horrendously noisy – particularly for Americans not accustomed to European urban living. Try to determine whether the apartment you are considering faces a quiet street or is on an inner courtyard. One of the most frequent complaints heard from American visitors to Paris is that they ended up in an intolerably noisy apartment.

Elevators are a commodity. You might like the price of a 5th floor walk-up when you’re working out your budget in Topeka, but your feet will yowl in protest after a day of sightseeing in the City of Light. Paris is a walking city: if you are looking at an apartment above the second floor (and don’t forget, ’second floor’ in French means ‘third floor’ in English) check carefully to make sure it has an elevator. Think of hauling those suitcases up and down three flights of stairs! Think of climbing five flights of stairs because you forgot your sunglasses! Elevators are an important element in the price of Paris real estate and the rule applies to one-week rentals just as it does to lifetime investments.

Furnishings are expensive and some Paris tourist apartments are furnished in a style that can best be described as bare-bones minus ten, plastic plates, rickety, cast-off furniture, plastic throw-away cups. Nicer apartments have nicer furnishings. Look for an apartment with real cotton sheets and towels, decent plates, glasses and cookware and comfortable furnishings.

You may not always be able to find a place with real antiques and a real art collection (excuse us while we boast) but you are certainly entitled to a place with style, taste and charm. This is, after all, Paris. If you wanted paper napkins and cheap plastic dishes, you could have spent your vacation with your sister-in-law at the lake.

One final note: You’ll be surprised, as we often are, to find apartments that seem ridiculously over- or under-priced in relation to the above criteria. Trust your own analysis. Some places are more expensive because they do more extensive advertising or simply have more aggressive owners; some places are under-priced because the owners are timid, or are new to the market (like us), or simply don’t want to be bothered with trying to get a high price. An apartment’s price doesn’t necessarily prove anything: it’s possible to find terrific cheap apartments and nightmares that cost a fortune.

Be clear about what you are looking for. Make careful comparisons between apartments, using the above guidelines. Then make the best decision you can, based on the information at hand. The bottom line is that Paris is the most beautiful, exciting city in the world: no matter where you stay, you’ll have a wonderful time.

Bon voyage!

Visiting Paris Wisely and Safely

As the #1 tourist destination in the world, Paris does have it’s share of petty crime and an aware visitor is the smartest kind of tourist. Paris is statistically one of the safest major metropolitan areas in Europe. Violent crime rates are fairly low in Paris. Crime directed against tourists is the kind that can ruin a vacation: stolen wallets, stolen baggage, credit card fraud. There’s a sucker born every minute and ten thousand new suckers jetting into Paris every day, so the thieves and pickpockets don’t need to change their methods much; they just practice them until they’ve got it perfect. If they successfully rob you, it will be because their method was new to you, but not to them. Unlike American cities, where the rich tend to flee to the suburbs, the poor and the immigrants are relegated to the Paris neighborhoods hit hardest by crime which are those on the outskirts of the city so avoid travelling to the Northern Paris suburbs of Saint-Denis, Aubervilliers, Saint-Ouen, etc. after dark. Never leave your bags or valuables unattended in the metro, bus or other public areas. Not only do you risk theft but unattended bags are sometimes considered a security threat.

Here are some common tips for the savvy traveler:

Driving in Paris is not advisable and can be both dangerous and aggravating. Parking spaces are limited, traffic is dense, and erratic driving is common. If you must drive, make sure you have up-to-date international insurance. Pedestrians should be especially careful while crossing streets and busy intersections. Drivers can be very aggressive in Paris and traffic laws are frequently broken. Even when the light is green, take extra caution while crossing the street. Also watch out for cars in certain areas that seem pedestrian-only (and perhaps are, in theory).

Cellular Phones are often whisked off café tables or even snatched while people hold them up to their ears. It’s recommended for tourists to keep their phones tucked away when you aren’t using them and most importantly be aware of your surroundings.

When traveling by taxi, make sure to verify the minimum price of the taxi ride before getting in the taxi. It is not uncommon for Paris taxi drivers to overcharge unsuspecting tourists, so be sure to watch the meter, and ask questions if you must. Also, giving the driver a suggested route ahead of time with the aid of a map is a good idea. the train

Try to go shopping with a Parisian friend and let them do the talking for you, while you keep a low profile. As a foreigner you will stick out like a sore thumb anyway and there is little you can do about that, but use discretion and try to make it less obvious, especially when you are alone and unsure of your directions.

Try not to make a big show of getting a street-map out, or going through all your pockets looking for this roll of film or that bus ticket. It only serves to draw attention to you on the street and to better indicate to the pick-pocket .which pocket your wallet is in.

Please be aware of the ‘mess on the back’ trick. Someone draws your attention to a mark on the back of your jacket (usually ketchup or mayonnaise squirted on, or cold water squirted on the back of your shirt in hot weather) and offers you a tissue to wipe it off. While he is helping, he is also helping himself to your wallet. (This happened to me, but I was ready for it and asked him to do the wiping, which he declined! I walked off, but he was most insistent that I really did have something on my back, and followed me to ‘assist’ me further. I still ignored him, and when I got home and checked, sure enough there was absolutely nothing there, except his damp palm print on my shirt which had remained in the intense humidity!)

Fortunately, these are not common occurences in Paris but it’s best to be prepared and aware of all the situations when traveling to Paris.

Paris is not recognized as a heavy crime destination as other prime destinations are. But June is the prime month for visiting Paris and visitors to Paris need to be aware of the safety pitfalls and the tactics of petty criminals.
